Exhibit: Women of a New Tribe
at Central Library (816-701-3400)

From Saturday, July 26—Sunday, September 7, 2008, east coast photographer Jerry Taliaferro's vision of the modern black woman comes to life at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., with the photo exhibit, Women of a New Tribe. The exhibit of approximately 75 black-and-white portraits pays homage to the physical and spiritual beauty of black women from many different walks of life while visually harkening back to the glamour photography of the 1930s and '40s. To give the exhibit a local touch, Taliaferro conducted a photo shoot in Kansas City with women representing such diverse sectors as education, law, real estate, and the arts. "These beautiful women have always been around us. They are our wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends," said Taliaferro, who first debuted the exhibit in 2002. "Perhaps in seeing their beauty, we will come to see what makes a woman truly beautiful. Just maybe we will come to understand that real beauty is more than that which can be seen. Real beauty is that which lifts us, real beauty touches our hearts." The exhibit has traveled to a number of cities, but the Kansas City Public Library is the first Midwestern venue. A complementary series of programs celebrating the beauty, strength, and resolve of black women will take place at the Central Library. Click here for more information. |
